The move comes after 73 clubs demanded Al-Shalmani’s resignation to avoid “further divisions” within the Libyan sporting community.

The clubs confirmed in a joint statement that Al-Shalmani’s continued presence “represents a major obstacle to the development of Libyan football and that his stay will exacerbate the current crisis and increase divisions within the sporting community.”

The clubs stressed the need to hold elections to choose a new president of the federation, to ensure “the selection of a new leadership capable of leading Libyan football out of the current crisis.”

The Libyan FA had taken the decision to increase the number of clubs participating in the Premier League to 36 clubs instead of 24, dividing it into two groups of 18 clubs for each group. This decision was widely rejected by the clubs, who demanded a general assembly to be held to withdraw confidence in the board of directors headed by Al-Shalmani.
