Libyan Crisis: Algeria Will Host an International Conference To Support the Holding of Elections

Algeria will host an international conference to support Libya’s government of national unity plan for the organization of elections in the country.

The decision was announced on Monday by the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to the Libyan Prime Minister, Abdelhamid Dbeibeh, received in an audience at the headquarters of the presidency in Algiers.

“The President of the Algerian Republic welcomed the measures taken to organize elections, emphasizing his support for these steps and for the international coordination concerning them, as well as the preparations for an international conference to be hosted by the ‘Algeria in favor of holding elections in Libya,’ the Libyan government said on its Facebook page, without specifying the date of the conference.

Arrived Monday afternoon on an official visit to Algiers, Abdelhamid Dbeibeh was accompanied by several ministers, the chief of the general staff, the head of the general intelligence service, and the head of the internal security service. After being welcomed by his Algerian counterpart, Aรฏmene Benabderrahmane, and by the Minister of the Interior, Kamel Beldjoud, the first head of the Libyan government was received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

According to the same source, Abdelhamid Dbeibeh handed over to the Algerian Head of State the document bearing “the general framework of the plan for the restitution of the political decision to the Libyan people through the holding of elections”.

The document details the steps taken by the government to organize elections, stating “that this process requires regional and international support for its implementation”.

As a reminder, the government of Abdelhamid Dbeibeh has been facing a worsening situation for several weeks after Parliament gave its confidence to a new government led by the former Minister of the Interior, Fathi Bashagha, while Dbeibeh refuses to step down as Prime Minister before the elections are held.
