Kenya has overtaken South Africa to become Africa’s top avocado exporter.
In central Kenya in particular, where the majority of the country’s small avocado growers are located, coffee trees are rapidly being replaced by avocado trees. One issue surrounding this new production is avocado theft. Avocado thieves are forcing county farmers to form vigilante groups to protect their crops.
Murang’a County is Kenya’s top avocado producer and many farmers there are uprooting other cash crops like coffee and tea to plant fruit avocados, Freshplaza tells us.

Kenya is currently the world’s third-largest producer of avocados. It is the first exported fruit of the country. Last year, the East African nation overtook South Africa to become Africa’s top exporter of avocados.
