Italian minister in Algiers, ‘same approach on Libya’, Constant cooperation with Italy on regional issues – Messahel, , Algeria.
(ANSAmed) – TUNIS, FEBRUARY 22 – Algeria will collaborate “permanently” with Italy on various regional issues, starting with the crisis in Libya, said Abdelkader Messahel, Algerian Minister for Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League. Messahel’s comments came during the third meeting of the ‘Strategic Bilateral Dialogue on Political Issues and Security Between Italy and Algeria’, held Tuesday in Algiers with Italian Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Vincenzo Amendola.
A statement from the Algerian Foreign Ministry reiterated the Algerian position on the Libyan crisis: “favorable to a political solution and to inclusive dialogue between the Libyan parties, without exception, except groups considered terrorist organisations by the UN”.
The meeting in Algiers was a follow-up to the one held in Rome on July 8 last year.
The agenda included the main regional crises (Libya, Tunisia, Mali and the Sahel crisis, Western Sahara) and the evaluation of terrorist threats in the region.
In that context, particular attention was given to the situation in Libya and the international community’s role in stabilising the country, said a statement from the Italian foreign ministry.
It said Italy and Algeria share the same approach to the Libya crisis: support of Libyan ownership, respect for territorial integrity and country unity, and an inclusive process in the context of United Nations actions.
Both Italy and Algeria believe that the Libyan political accord – around which eventual adjustments and recalibrations can be made – must remain the frame for a solution to the crisis.
“We can’t allow Libya to fall again into chaos,” Amendola said.
“The reopening of our embassy in Tripoli on January 10 shows our commitment to and our trust in the country’s ability to overcome the current crisis. Our ambassador in Libya went to Tobruk in recent days to highlight Italian support for the entire Libyan population in the path towards reconciliation,” he said. (ANSAmed).
