Is Morocco Heading for New Containment?

The summer season as well as the easing of restriction measures expose Morocco to an upsurge in cases of Covid-19 contamination, particularly by these propagation times of the highly contagious Delta variant. This is what Dr. Tayeb Hamdi, a researcher in health policies and systems and vice-president of the National Health Federation, said in an interview with Challenge.

According to Dr. Tayeb Hamdi, the Delta variant is already worrying Morocco and all the countries of the world for that matter, since, as with any variant, preventive measures cannot prevent its appearance in the country. At best, they only curb its spread and reduce the number of imported cases.

The risk is great for Morocco in this summer period, with the opening of borders, the return of MRE (Marhaba 2021), and tourists, the displacement of the population, the multiplication of the Delta virus in neighboring countries in Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Great Britain, and everywhere, which means that it is possible to import one of the variants, the Delta or another, explains the specialist.

This is why people at risk over the age of 40, with chronic diseases, and having missed their vaccination appointment, must go for the vaccination, even if vaccine deliveries are slowed down in the region. country. But first, we must prioritize professionals who are in contact with the population such as teachers for a safe return to school, people working in the security sector, commerce, transport, he indicates.

According to Dr. Hamdi, if the Delta variant cannot call into question the kingdom’s vaccination strategy, it is to be feared that with more travel, gatherings, and therefore circulation of the virus, it will cancel the measures to relax the restrictions granted by the authorities in recent weeks, in view of a successful vaccination campaign, (to date, a population fully vaccinated at 30%).

There is no way to stop these variants. The only solution is to vaccinate a large part of the population very quickly and above all to continue to strictly comply with preventive measures, and thus to break the chains of transmission, concluded Dr. Hamdi who nevertheless remains optimistic about the eradication of the disease. coronavirus.
