The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during the interview granted to the Qatari news channel Al Jazeera, broadcast on Tuesday evening, raised several points related to Algeria’s relations with its northern neighbors, in this case, France, Italy and Spain, as well as those with its direct neighbors, in particular Morocco, with which diplomatic relations have been cut since August 2021.
Referring to relations with Morocco, the Head of State affirms that “they have reached the point of no return” while expressing his “regrets” that relations between the two countries have reached this stage of deterioration. He points out that Algeria’s position is a reaction to Morocco’s hostile actions.
Speaking about Algeria’s relations with Spain, which have been going through a turbulent period for a year following Madrid’s decision to align itself with the Moroccan position regarding the Western Sahara issue. “We consider Spain’s position vis-à-vis Western Sahara as an individual position of the Sanchez Government”, stressing that Spain “has aligned itself in the Western Sahara file with secret attitudes that do not discharge it not one of its responsibilities”, declared the President of the Republic.
Referring to relations with Italy, the Head of State affirmed that they were “strategic, historical and very solid, going back to the time of the War of Liberation”, noting that the energy agreement with Italy covers electricity, gas and hydrogen, and we are working to implement it in cooperation with Europe”.
Concerning the crisis in Ukraine, the President of the Republic indicated that “Algeria is entitled to play a role of mediation in the Ukrainian crisis, Algeria being among the rare countries to enjoy the credibility necessary to discharge this mission”, adding that my visit to Russia is still relevant and will take place in May at the invitation of the Russian President”.
With regard to the Allegro-French relations, the President of the Republic indicated that ½ our relationship with France is fluctuating”, stressing that “the Algerian ambassador will soon be back in Paris”.
