Hilale Slams Algeria’s ‘False Status’ of Observer in Western Sahara

Despite its denials, the responsibility of Algeria in the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara is undeniable, stressed Hilale, before asking a series of questions about the responsibilities of Algeria in this dispute.

“Who created the ‘Polisario’ and is providing it with political and military support for 40 years? This is not an observer country. It is Algeria. Who is mobilizing all its diplomatic apparatus against its neighbor, Morocco? This is not an observer country. This is Algeria,” he noted.

The Moroccan diplomat went to add that Algeria spends “billions of dollars” from Algerians’ taxpayer money in order to finance the Polisario.

“Who spends billions of dollars from the Algerian taxpayer to finance a separatist group that has proven links with the international and regional terrorism? This is not an observer country. It is Algeria. Who refuses to reveal to its own MPs the budget reserved for the ‘Polisario’? This is not an observer country. It is Algeria, Hilale added.

Hilale pointed out that Algeria had called for the partition of the Western Sahara in 2001 at a time when Former United Nations Secretary General, James Baker, was attempting to work out a political solution between Morocco and the Polisario.

“Who officially rejected the draft Framework Agreement of Baker in 2001 and then in 2002? This is not an observer country. It is Algeria,” he said.

“Algeria continues to mislead the international community and lie to its own people behind the false position of defending the principle of self-determination,” Hilale concluded.
