The African Handball Confederation has decided on the organization of the future CAN of the discipline.ย Having decided to postpone to a later date the tournament to be held in Morocco from 13 to 23 January 2022, the African body has ruled on the 25thย CAN handball.
The competition will take place from June 22 to July 2, 2022, according to the CAHB which does not specify the place of its taking place.ย The African body does not specify whether it has decided to withdraw the organization in Morocco.ย The CAHB also decided to redo the draw for the 25th CAN of handball and to give a “favorable response” to the appeals brought by Zambia and Algeria.
“The new date of the said drawing of lots will be communicated at a later date”, indicates the press release, without specifying the nature of the appeals brought by these two countries and which are at the origin of the cancellation of the drawing of lots and the postponement of the CAN of Handball.
Handball CAN withdrawn in Morocco?
In addition, the African Handball Confederation has decided to examine the “cases of other countries having expressed the wish” to take part in the 25th African Cup of Nations 2022 and the “possibility of taking into account these different requests”.
On December 9, the CAHB announced the postponement of the handball CAN to a later date, in particular following the appeal brought by Algeria, six-time African champion of the nations. During the draw made the day before, the Greens were not there. Algeria has decided to boycott the handball CAN because of the possibility of scheduling matches in the occupied Sahrawi city of Laรขyoune.
Algeria’s last coronation in this competition dates back to 2014. The Greens dominated the handball CAN in the 1980s, with five straight titles: 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, and 1989. The handball CAN is dominated by Tunisia (10 titles), Algeria (7) and Egypt (7).ย No other African country has won the CAN so far.
