On Wednesday, February 5, the Head of Government, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch, officially launched the 7th edition of the International Halieutis Fair, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. This flagship event, dedicated to maritime fishing and aquaculture, is being held in Agadir until February 9, with France as the guest of honor.
Held under the theme “Research and Innovation for a Sustainable Fisheries Sector,” this fair embodies Morocco’s commitment to making scientific research a strategic pillar to ensure the sustainability of marine resources and enhance the competitiveness of national companies. Mr. Akhannouch emphasized that this ambition aligns with the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aiming to position Morocco as a key player in the international maritime fishing system.
“Scientific research and innovation are essential levers for developing a sustainable blue economy and addressing environmental challenges,” declared the Head of Government in his opening speech. He also praised the government’s efforts to support the sector’s transformations and enhance its international appeal.
A Fair with Major Economic Stakes
The maritime fishing sector plays a crucial role in Morocco’s economy. In 2024, national seafood production reached 1.42 million tons, generating export revenue of 31 billion dirhams in 2023. These achievements place Morocco as the leading producer in Africa and 13th globally.
The Halieutis Fair, now an indispensable meeting point for industry professionals, hosts 523 exhibitors from 54 countries this year, including four new participants: South Korea, the United Kingdom, India, and the Sultanate of Oman. This edition highlights the latest innovations in fishing, seafood processing, and aquaculture.
A Tour of Strategic Pavilions
During his visit, Mr. Akhannouch toured the five strategic pavilions of the fair: institutional, international, value addition and processing, fleet and equipment, and aquaculture. These areas provide a comprehensive showcase of technological advances and investment opportunities in the sector.
On the sidelines of the event, the Head of Government underscored the importance of strengthening international partnerships and attracting foreign investments to support sector growth. “Morocco is resolutely looking to the future, with a clear strategy for developing sustainable and competitive maritime fishing,” he affirmed.
A Promising Future for the Blue Economy
With this 7th edition, the Halieutis Fair confirms its status as a major international platform for the fisheries sector. It also reflects Morocco’s determination to establish itself as an African and global leader in this field, while addressing sustainability and innovation challenges.
