Germany: Massive Regularizations and Recruitment of Foreign Workers

In Germany, new measures are underway concerning immigrants in an irregular situation, but also for the recruitment of foreign workers.

The German government adopted on Wednesday, July 6 a bill on the possibility of regularizing tens of thousands of immigrants, deemed โ€œwell-integratedโ€ in Germany. This project awaits final approval from parliament.

According to the Schengen visa info site, more than 100,000 migrants are currently in Germany in an illegal situation. Commonly called โ€œtolerated foreignersโ€, they will be able to benefit from this law. This should allow them to become legal residents of the country.

Immigration policy: what could change in Germany

According to the Minister of the Interior, quoted by the same source, Germany also plans to “put an end to bureaucracy and insecurity for people who are already part of our society”. However, “those who commit offenses or refuse to provide information about their identity are excluded from the possibility of residence”, she added.

Once this bill has the approval of the German parliament and cantons, several changes will occur in the regularization process. It provides, in fact, to grant a residence permit to those who have lived in the country for more than five years and who have not been involved in any criminal activity.

Persons aged 27 and under will have the right of residence after three years in Germany. The language proficiency requirement to join a family member will also be removed. In return, the bill concerns the expulsion of people who have committed criminal offenses by facilitating the process of depriving them of their right to stay…

Immigration Germany: new facilitations for workers in certain sectors

In the same vein, Europe’s leading economy also plans to attract more workers from third countries. In addition to other sectors, Germany has decided to facilitate the entry into the country of workers from third countries working in the aviation sector, in view of the shortages of labor in airports.

Indeed, the review of immigration policies launched in Germany relates in particular to a plan to simplify immigration rules for foreign workers. According to what the site โ€œI am expatโ€ reported last June, the German government intends to reduce red tape in order to allow companies to recruit workers from other countries.

In addition to airports, many other sectors have been impacted by the health crisis and are therefore in need of recruitment. According to the Minister of the Interior, these include, among others, certain services including restaurants, bars and hotels.
