An Algerian university has launched an appeal to its compatriots -scientists established outside the country- inviting them to give intensive sessions in their respective disciplines in English during the summer. This request is part of the new policy of Algiers which seeks to boost the learning of English at the university level.
The public university M’Hamed Bougara of Boumerdès published a press release announcing the implementation at the beginning of August of intensive sessions in English intended to improve the mastery of this language by scientific staff, indicates the online media Tout sur l’ Algeria (TSA).
The administration of the university requests “all Algerian scientists, professionals and researchers established abroad”, who would be present in Algeria during the summer period, to give intensive courses in their respective disciplines in English as part of the program. of the faculty of science and technology.
The establishment places particular emphasis on the following disciplines: science and technology, artificial intelligence, information and communication technology, renewable energy, robotics, medicine, biotechnology, nanotechnology, etc. It thus aims to prepare researchers and doctoral students in these fields.
The University of Boumerdès specifies that it will bear the accommodation costs of the trainers.
What is the objective of this project?
This is a new initiative by the Algerian state aimed at accelerating the learning of English at all levels of education in the country, recalls TSA.
Another goal of the initiative is to connect participants with their counterparts from universities around the world for future collaborations.
Replace with English?
The transition to English has been gradually promoted by the Algerian government since 2022, having started with the primary level. From the 2022 school year, English has been introduced there from the 3rd year of primary school.
The approach continued at the university level, by identifying the students to be trained in English from that same year, established by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in November 2022.
In August 2022, the Algerian authorities chose English to mark the “French Presidency” on the desk where Emmanuel Macron spoke upon his arrival in the country.
Last November, the Bank of Algeria issued a new note of 2,000 DA, which bears an inscription in English, unlike the old notes.
