The French anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office opened an investigation today, Saturday, August 24, 2024, for “attempted assassination”, after the explosion of a car containing a gas cylinder and a fire in front of a Jewish synagogue in the south of the country, injuring a police officer.
“Inside the synagogue were five people, including the rabbi, who was unharmed,” the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said in a statement, recalling that investigations are actively continuing to allow the arrest of the perpetrator(s).
The city’s mayor, Stรฉphane Rossignol, told Agence France-Presse that a member of the municipal police was injured at the scene.
He added that surveillance cameras captured footage of a person setting cars on fire in front of the Beth Yaakov (Beit Yaakov) synagogue.
France’s interim interior minister has ordered security reinforcements to protect Jewish places of worship.
Local media reported that one of the two cars contained a propane tank.
