In Normandy, in the north of France, 12% of marriages celebrated in 2020 are mixed unions, according to figures from Insee, revealed this Saturday, May 14 by the Actu.fr site. Mixed marriages with a spouse of Algerian origin come first, ahead of those with Tunisians and Moroccans, adds the same source.
According to the doctor in sociology and lecturer at the University of Caen, Charlotte Le Van, interviewed by ”La Presse de la Manche”, marriage in France is not currently in crisis. It notes, in fact, a recovery during the year 2021, according to the latest estimates.
Algerians lead mixed marriages in Normandy
Citing statistics from the Normandy region, the same media specifies that 60 marriages, or 2%, involved spouses who were both foreigners in 2020. In addition, there were nearly 850 mixed marriages, or 12%, with only one spouse of foreign nationality.
In the latter case, the figures show that marriages with a single spouse of Algerian nationality represent the highest rate compared to citizens of Tunisian, Moroccan and other nationalities.
Indeed, “19% of those affected by the 850 mixed marriages in 2020 are Algerian, 9% Moroccan and 8% Tunisian, no more than 5% for other nationalities”, indicates the same source.
It should be noted that these proportions, with regard to mixed marriages with a single spouse of foreign nationality, are “quite close to the other metropolitan regions, excluding รle-de-France (26%)”, according to the same statistics.
