Reports in North Africa claim the Spaniard is a contender to coach the Desert Foxes
Former Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka may be set to become Algeriaโs new national team boss, according to reports in the North African football media.
Algerian website dzfoot.com has reported that the former Boro head coach could be set for a swift return to the dugout after leaving the second-bottom of the Premier League Teessiders by mutual consent last month.
The website posted a Tweet to its 353,000 followers on social media over the weekend connecting Karanka to the Algeria job.
Translated into English, the post read: โWe proclaim in the conditional, of course, but the next coach of the Algeria would be Aitor Karanka.โ
Karanka has kept a low profile since his three-and-a-half year Boro tenure ended after the club dropped into the English top flightโs relegation zone.
The Gazette previously reported that the seven-bedroom mansion in the North Yorkshire village of East Harlsey which the Spaniard called home during his Boro reign was put up for sale last week.
Algeria are looking for a new head coach after Georges Leekens resigned in January following the teamโs early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.
Algeriaโs players include Leicester star Riyad Mahrez and Boro midfielder Adlene Guedioura, who Karanka signed from Watford in January.
