Fires in Algeria: Switzerland Provides Invaluable Help

The damage caused by the huge fires that struck several regions of Algeria and more particularly Kabylia did not spare any aspect. The casualties are estimated at more than 200 dead, the number of injured suffering from severe burns has not yet been revealed. In addition, 794 buildings and 831 farms were affected in the wilaya of Tizi-Ouzou alone.

Many countries extended their hands to Algeria like France, Spain, Russia as well as Kuwait which sent fire fighting equipment and materials. Thursday, September 9, it was the Swiss Confederation that expressed its full support for Algeria as part of the national effort to help victims of the fires. 

Indeed, and according to a press release from the Swiss embassy in Algeria, a donation worth 150,000 Swiss Francs (just over 22 million dinars) was granted to the Algeria Red Crescent in order to “strengthen its response capacities in regions affected by fires in august 2021”.

What does this donation consist of?

The president of the Algeria institution, in this case, said enables wished to express her very warm thanks to the Swiss ambassador in Algeria, Lukas Rosenkranz for his invaluable help for the benefit of the victims of the fires.

“It is an initiative that we appreciate at its true value and which reflects the attachment of the swiss people, the country hosting the headquarters of the World humanitarian Movement, to one of the fundamental principles of humanitarian action, which is solidarity”, Saida Benhabiles added.

It should be noted that this donation, the value of which is estimated at 150,000 Swiss Francs, consists of 12 generators, 150 anti-decubitus mattresses, 230 wheelchairs.

The generators, some of which have a power of 40 kva and others of 8 kva, will be installed at the sanitary structures in order to supply them with electricity. As for the anti-decubitus mattresses, they will make it possible to treat the wounded suffering from serious burns. Finally, the wheelchairs sent to Switzerland will replace those destroyed by the fires.
