This Thursday, FIFA updated its ranking of nations for the first time since April, following the international window at the beginning of June and in particular the 5th day of the CAN 2023 qualifiers.
And this edition represents rather a bad vintage for the African selections, starting with the first of them, Morocco. Slowed down by Cape Verde (0-0) and then beaten in South Africa (1-2), Walid Regragui’s band lost two places worldwide, being relegated to 13th place. The Atlas Lions nevertheless remain largely leaders in Africa. Their Senegalese runner-up stagnated in 18th place despite his prestigious victory against Brazil (4-2), 3rd in this ranking. Tunisia, on the other hand, paid for its defeat in Equatorial Guinea (1-0) by being ejected from the world’s top 30 to find themselves 31st.
Mali overtakes Ivory Coast
The fall is even more brutal for the Elephants. Showered 3-0 in Zambia, Côte d’Ivoire, the host country of the next CAN, leaves the Top 50 worldwide by losing 6 places to find themselves 51st. Progress in sight on the other hand for Mali (+3), which doubles the Ivorians and integrates the Top 50 (50th), or for DR Congo (69th, +1), completely relaunched in the CAN playoffs following to his victory in Gabon (2-0).
Special mention finally to Togo (122nd), eliminated but which jumped 7 places, as well as to Mauritania, which joined the Top 100 (99th) thanks to an increase of 6 places. See you on July 20 for the next edition of this ranking.
