Exports: Russia Aims to Make Algeria the Gateway to Africa

According to the Russian Export Center (VEB RF Group), Algeria could soon become a major hub for exporting Russian products to African markets.

This was reported on Thursday (January 16, 2025) by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti in an interview with Ivan Nalitch, the Commercial Representative of the Russian Federation in Algeria. Nalitch highlighted that Russia exports a diverse range of products to Algeria, including wheat (with Russia holding 30% of the Algerian market), minerals, fertilizers, and various chemicals. Russia is also working on expanding its exports of powdered milk and pharmaceuticals.

Furthermore, the Russian commercial representative emphasized that due to its strategic geographical location, Algeria has significant potential to become an important logistics center for Russian exports to the African continent. He confirmed that the Russian Export Center is working to improve the legal framework, aiming to remove administrative barriers and facilitate the setup processes for Russian businesses in Algeria.

Among the promising areas for cooperation between Russia and Algeria, Ivan Nalitch mentioned agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, and information technology. He further noted that discussions will assist companies in understanding the details of Russian product certification processes and key exhibitions scheduled for 2025, along with the specifics of business communication.

Russian Companies Eyeing the Algerian Market

Nalitch also explained that the Russian trade representation is working to expand cooperation between the two countries and provides the necessary support for companies looking to enter the Algerian market. He stated, “Cooperation with Algeria extends across a wide range of areas, and Russian companies’ interest in this market has significantly increased in recent years, as have commercial contacts.”

In 2024, the Russian Export Center (VEB), in collaboration with the trade representation in Algeria, organized a mission focused on construction and information technology. In November 2025, it plans to organize a multi-sector mission.

Artur Zavyalov, Director of Infrastructure Development and Non-Financial Products at the Center, confirmed that the discussions with the commercial representative will help understand the Algerian market’s specifics and build the necessary knowledge base for establishing beneficial exports for both countries.

In October last year, during the Algerian-Russian Business Forum, Kamel Hammeni, President of the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI), announced that trade volumes between Algeria and Russia had increased from $1.05 billion in 2022 to $1.48 billion in 2023. In the first four months of 2024, this volume reached $524 million.
