Algeria has just put in place new arrangements for the declaration of currency by travelers at border crossings. These changes, which came into force following a ministerial decree published in Official Journal No. 51, aim to modernize and strengthen the control of cross-border monetary flows.
The decree, signed on July 20 by Finance Minister Laaziz Faid, reaffirms the obligation for all travelers, residents or non-residents, to declare sums exceeding a certain threshold, whether in Algerian dinars or foreign currency. foreign. This measure applies to bank notes, coins, bearer means of payment, commercial paper, and other negotiable values.
Digitalization of the process
One of the main innovations is the introduction of electronic declaration. Travelers are now encouraged to complete their declaration online before arriving at the customs office. However, the possibility of making a written declaration on-site remains maintained.
When leaving the country, special rules apply. Travelers must present, depending on their status and the amount carried, either a bank debit notice or an authorization from the Bank of Algeria. For non-residents wishing to export amounts not used during their stay, presentation of the entry declaration form endorsed by an approved financial institution is required.
Strengthening international cooperation
The customs administration will create databases of declarations, which can be shared within the framework of national and international cooperation, under the legislation in force.
These new measures are part of a process of modernization and transparency of cross-border financial flows while adapting to international standards in the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism.
