Ex-President of the Algerian Football Federation, Kheireddine Zetchi, Placed in Pre-Trial Detention

The former president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), Kheireddine Zetchi, is at the center of a major corruption scandal. He was placed in pre-trial detention this morning by an investigating judge.

About five months ago, specifically on July 1, the National Economic and Financial Crime Division near the Algiers Court opened an investigation based on suspicions of corruption within the Algerian Football Federation during the last two Olympic mandates. The investigation involved 14 officials of the federation.

This morning, Kheireddine Zetchi, the former president of the FAF, appeared before the investigating judge at the Economic Division of the Sidi M’hamed Court. He was subsequently ordered into pre-trial detention at Kolรฉa prison, according to several Algerian media reports.

Three Former FAF Officials Already in Pre-Trial Detention Since October 9, 2024

It is worth noting that other former officials of the Algerian Football Federation, also implicated in the scandal, had appeared before the same judge on October 9. Three of these officials have been placed in pre-trial detention:

  • Two former general secretaries, Mohamed Saรขd and Mounir D’bichi,
  • The former director of general administration, Abdelghani Nekkache.

However, two former members of the federal board, Abdellah Keddah and Larbi Oumamar, have been placed under judicial control until the end of the investigation.

It should also be mentioned that the two former presidents of the FAF, Charaf-Eddine Amara and Djahid Zefizef, are also implicated in this significant corruption case. The investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be seen if more individuals will be implicated in the coming weeks. This case continues to unfold.
