EU-AU Summit: Sadr’s Participation Is a “Stinging Humiliation” in Morocco (Belani)

The work of the 6th Summit of Heads of State and  Government of the European Union and the African Union took place on Thursday and Friday, February 18 in Brussels in the presence of several European and African leaders.

Among them is Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra and SADR President Brahim Ghali. The presence of the leader of the Polisario Front at this summit constitutes “an important step on the way to achieving national sovereignty over all the occupied territories”, declared the adviser to the Saharawi president Nana Labaat Rachid on her Facebook page. But this presence has greatly irritated Morocco.

Members of the Morocco-EU Commission of the Moroccan House of Representatives (Parliament) expressed to the European Parliament their ”  astonishment  ” and disapproval of the presence of the Sahrawi Republic at the Brussels summit.

Algeria reacted this Saturday by the voice of the Special Envoy in charge of the file of Western Sahara and the countries of the Maghreb. Amar Belani said in a statement to TSA that Rasa’s participation in this summit is a “deafening slap in the face” and a “stinging humiliation” in Morocco.

“Deafening Slap”

“The participation of the SADR, represented by its president, Brahim Ghali, in the 6th AU-EU summit and the speech of the latter during the work of the round table “peace and security” in which many African heads of state took part and Europeans constitute a deafening slap in the face and a scathing humiliation for the Kingdom of Morocco,” said Amar Belani.

The Algerian ambassador adds that Morocco has “increased maneuvers and pressure to hinder the participation of the SADR in this important diplomatic meeting devoted to the establishment of a new renewed partnership between the two groups”.

“This humiliation is all the greater since President Ghali had, on the sidelines of the Summit, many bilateral talks with his peers, including with the head of the Spanish government,” added Amar Belani.
