Energy & Mines: Algeria Bets on This Metal “Essential for Technology” Whose Demand is Exploding

Algeria is resolutely engaging in the exploitation of its lithium resources, a precious metal dubbed “white gold.” The Algerian Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Arkab, will chair a workshop dedicated to the development of this strategic sector this Sunday.

The objective is clear: to develop a comprehensive roadmap to make lithium a driver of economic and energy growth.

This initiative aligns with President Tebboune’s desire to diversify the national economy by leveraging Algeria’s subterranean wealth. Lithium, a key component in batteries for electric vehicles and other electronic devices, holds strategic importance in the context of global energy transition.

The workshop will bring together experts, researchers, and industry players to assess Algeria’s lithium potential and define the best strategies for its exploitation. Initial explorations in the Tamanrasset and In Guezzam regions have been promising, thus sparking significant interest in this metal.

Energy and Mines: Algeria Bets on Lithium

These explorations were conducted by a team consisting of Chinese mining experts from Ganfeng Lithium, along with representatives from the Ministry, Sonarem (National Society for Mining Research and Exploitation), the National Agency for Mining Activities (ANAM), the Geological and Mining Research Office (ORGM), and the Algerian Geological Survey Agency (ASGA).

This rare metal is at the heart of many advanced technologies, and its price continues to rise. By developing this sector, Algeria could strengthen its energy independence, attract foreign investments, and create new jobs.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences to develop a global strategy. The aim is to position Algeria as a major player in the global lithium market and contribute to the global energy transition.

Lithium is a true El Dorado for industry. It is used in manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, and many other electronic devices. The development of this sector could thus open new prospects for Algerian industry.

Algeria has decided to bet on lithium to diversify its economy and position itself as a major player in the energy transition. The stakes are high, both economically and strategically.

The development of this sector could transform Algeria’s industrial landscape and open new prospects for the country.
