Emirati Investors Are Back in Force in Tunisia

The UAE-based Bukhatir Group will relaunch a $5 billion real estate project in Tunis, Tunisian sources told Reuters on Friday, the first major project in the country since the 2011 revolution.

The same sources specified that the group will officially launch the Tunis Sports City project next week after a hiatus due to the revolution that toppled former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

The project includes sports academies, a golf course, hotels and apartments on 275 hectares north of Tunis. It is initially expected to provide around 10,000 jobs in the country, where the unemployment rate is over 18%.

Similarly, the Tunisian government has awarded Emirati company AMEA Power a concession contract and power purchase agreement for a 100 MW solar project in Kairouan, worth $100 million.

The construction of the solar power plant should “begin by the end of the year”, specifies the Emirati press agency WAM.

The project foresees the production of nearly 223,171 MWh of electricity per year, which will save more than 113,525 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.
