Economic Freedoms: Morocco, Leader in North Africa, Algeria Among the Worst Globally

Morocco Confirms Its Position as a Regional Leader in Economic Freedom, According to Heritage Instituteโ€™s Latest Report

Morocco has solidified its status as a regional leader in economic freedom, as highlighted in the latest report from the Heritage Institute. With a score of 60.3 points, the Kingdom ranks first in North Africa, 7th on the African continent, and 86th globally out of 176 evaluated countries. This ranking reflects Moroccoโ€™s ongoing efforts to promote economic openness and free markets.

The Economic Freedom Index, published annually by the American think tank, assesses economic policies and market conditions in 184 countries based on 12 indicators grouped into four key pillars: rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency, and open markets. Morocco excels in several areas, particularly in investment freedom (75 points), financial freedom (75 points), and monetary freedom (74.4 points), surpassing the global average in eight of the twelve indicators.

However, challenges remain in certain areas, notably government integrity (36.9 points) and judicial effectiveness (32.5 points), where further reforms are needed to enhance the countryโ€™s standing.

In a region where economic freedoms are generally limited, Morocco stands out significantly. It is the only North African country classified as “moderately free,” while neighbors like Mauritania (54.9 points) and Egypt (50.9 points) remain in the “mostly free” category.

Algeria, by contrast, scores a concerning 47.5 points, placing it in the “economic repression” category and ranking 160th worldwide. This near-bottom ranking underscores structural barriers severely hindering the countryโ€™s economic growth.

Through its economic reforms and commitment to openness, Morocco demonstrates that a free-market approach fosters growth and progress. With a more transparent legislative framework and increased efforts to improve governance, the Kingdom could climb even higher in global rankings.
