David Schenker’s upcoming visit to Algeria

The us assistant secretary of state for middle east affairs, David Schenker, is due to pay a diplomatic working visit to Algeria in the coming days.

This visit will take place as part of a diplomatic tour by David Schenker in the middle east and north Africa, from January 3 to 12, according to what the federal executive department of the united states in charge of international relations

The three countries concerned, according to the statement from the US federal executive department are: Algeria, Jordan and morocco.

Regarding the reasons for the tour, the press release specifies that the discussions will focus on economic and security cooperation, where the official will have to address “the deep commitment of the United States for the promotion of economic prosperity, peace and stability in the middle east and north Africa ”.

During the stage of this visit concerning north Africa, in this case Algeria and morocco, the question of western Sahara will certainly have to be addressed, in particular after the recognition by the outgoing president, Donald trump, of ” Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara ”.

It should be recalled that at the beginning of last October, former united states defense secretary Mark Esper paid a visit to Algeria.

During his meeting with the head of state Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the two parties raised the security issue in north Africa and the sahel, but also the means that could advance the strategic military and diplomatic partnership between the two countries.
