Currency transfers from the Tunisian diaspora exceed tourism receipts

Once again, remittances from the Tunisian diaspora saved the day in terms of foreign exchange in Tunisia. During the last 10 months of the year – until October 2020 – they recorded an increase of 9.7% in dinars and 8.6% in euros-dollars. This is what emerges from the data published by the BCT (Central Bank of Tunisia).

In total therefore, the Tunisian diaspora transferred 4.69 billion dinars, which represents an increase of 415 million dinars compared to the same period in 2019. Thus, again according to the BCT, this envelope represented 4.3% of the GDP, which is a record. Not only: these transfers greatly exceeded the tourist receipts recorded until October 2020. These reached, as a reminder, 1.8 billion dinars. The sector has been heavily impacted by the health crisis.
