COVID-19: Tunisia Lifts Nighttime Curfew

Tunisian President Kais Saied decided on Friday to lift the nighttime curfew in effect almost continuously since March 2020 to limit the spread of the epidemic, while requiring the vaccination certificate for participation in public or private events.

The lifting of the curfew, currently in effect between midnight and 5 a.m., will be effective from Sunday, the presidency said in a statement.

The presentation of a complete vaccination course certificate of two doses will however now be compulsory to “participate in public and private events, activities, and gatherings in open or closed spaces,” the statement said.

After a peak in contamination between July 7 and 13 with more than 3,000 cases per day and more than 100 deaths, Tunisia has experienced in recent weeks a considerable drop in the number of patients and deaths from COVID.

On September 22, Tunisia, a country of 12 million inhabitants, recorded 556 new cases including 7 deaths, according to the latest report from the Tunisian Ministry of Health.

This improvement in the health situation in the country comes after the acceleration of the vaccination campaign thanks to donations sent by several countries.

Almost 5 million people received the first dose of the vaccine and 2.6 million both doses.

The Ministry of Health plans to fully immunize 60% of the population by the end of October.
