COVID-19: Algeria Records a New Contamination Record

After a slight decline on Sunday, the curve of covid-19 contaminations in Algeria resumed its upward trend on Monday, January 24 to cross a new historic threshold.

According to the report of the Ministry of Health,  2215 new  covid-19 infections have been recorded in the last 24 hours in Algeria, against 2134 cases yesterday Sunday and 2211 cases Saturday. This is a new historic record, after that of 2,211 cases recorded on Saturday, January 22.

This small increase in cases of contamination in 24 hours occurs in the context of an unprecedented outbreak of the pandemic in Algeria where many positive cases are not counted, even in the opinion of public health specialists. On social networks, the macabre news of deaths due to covid-19 have resurfaced, as during the third wave of covid-19 which hit Algeria hard last summer.

โ€œA large population is affectedโ€

The current wave, dominated by the more contagious but less deadly Omicron variant, is less virulent than last summer’s, as official covid-19 death figures show.

While at the peak of 1,927 cases recorded on July 28, the death toll had reached 49, this time it remains relatively stable, between ten and 15 deaths per day.

According to the Ministry of Health, 13 people have succumbed to covid-19 in the past 24 hours in Algeria, compared to 14 yesterday Sunday, January 23, 13 dead Saturday, January 22, and 15 deaths Friday, January 21.

The number of patients in intensive care has not changed since yesterday Sunday. The official report published on Monday, January 24 reports 39 patients infected with covid-19 in intensive care (intubated), against 39 patients yesterday Sunday, 43 patients on Saturday, and 47 patients on Friday.

According to Professor Kamel Djenouhat, president of the Algerian Society of Immunology, who spoke this Monday on Algerian Radio, Algeria has not yet reached the peak of covid-19 contaminations. โ€œWe are a few days from the peak, probably before the end of January. In a few days, the virus will not find anyone in front of him who is not contaminated. As we can see, everyone is affected. A large population is affected,โ€ he said.
