The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release on the evening of Saturday, August 27, 2022, expressing its concern over recent developments in Libya.
The department called for restraint and a ceasefire to preserve Libya’s security, stability, and unity.
The Libyan capital has for some time been living to the rhythm of political disputes between rival governments; the one based in Tripoli and headed by Abdelhamid Dbeibah and the one chaired by the rival prime minister appointed by parliament, Fathi Bachagha, in Sirte.
The conflict took a serious turn overnight from Friday to Saturday with the outbreak of deadly clashes between a group affiliated with the Presidential Council and the 777 brigades reporting to the army chief of staff.
Urging the Libyans to make the voice of reason prevail in the resolution of disputes, Tunisian Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of combining the efforts of the international community in order to support Libya in “the completion of its political path” with the organization of elections likely to put an end to the current crisis and “build lasting institutions in the brotherly country”.
