The automotive industry recovery program is underway in Algeria. After that of the Italian manufacturer Fiat, another car complex is announced.
According to Tayeb Zitouni, Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, China has given Algeria its agreement for the forthcoming construction of a unit for the assembly or construction of electric vehicles or vehicles running on an internal combustion engine. This is one of the many agreements signed during Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s visit to China.
Among the investment promises amounting to nearly 36 billion USD are among the transport sector projects the construction of 2 rail links and the extension of the port of Annaba (north-east). The establishment of this automotive unit will complete the ongoing project of the Fiat manufacturer, whose factory under development in the city of Oran will deliver its first productions by the end of 2023.
These production units will open up a greater prospect for the automotive industry of the country, which has not experienced great growth. Algeria indeed imports a large part of its cars, mostly used vehicles, from Europe or Asia. It is a trend that the executive had tried to reverse by banning the import of used vehicles for almost 5 years, a decision later reversed in October 2022.
In addition to meeting national demand, the development of this industry should help renew the national vehicle fleet and contribute to energy transition programs in transport.
