Carrefour Announces Exit from Jordan Amid Boycott Pressure

“Effective November 4, 2024, Carrefour will cease all operations in Jordan and end its activities in the kingdom,” Carrefour stated in a message posted on its official Facebook page. The French retail giant expressed gratitude to its “customers for their support” and offered apologies “for any inconvenience this decision might cause.”

Several international brands, accused of providing direct or indirect support to Israel in the Gaza conflict, are facing boycotts in many Arab countries, including Morocco. A significant number of consumers in these countries are stopping their purchases of essential goods or medications from these retail brands, leading to financial difficulties for these multinationals and ultimately causing them to pack up and leave.

The BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) took action in December last year against the Carrefour group in Morocco, accusing it of complicity in war crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people. The issue stems from Carrefour’s partnership with two Israeli companies, Electra Consumer Products and its subsidiary Yenot Bitan, which are active in illegal Israeli settlements.

According to BDS, this partnership supports the exploitation of Palestinian resources and contributes to the maintenance of these settlements. BDS organized protests at Carrefour stores in Morocco towards the end of December, despite being prohibited by local authorities, and called on Moroccans to protest in order to end Carrefour’s association with these companies. The movement also launched an online campaign with the hashtag “boycotting is resisting” to raise awareness and mobilize Moroccan public opinion against Carrefour.
