A wave of media reports suggested that Algeria might join BRICS. However, these rumors are indeed based on shaky grounds, as a government source confirmed that Algeria has turned the page and has no ambition to join the conglomerate.
Dominated by the IMF, BRICS decisions seem to be part of a geopolitical strategy rather than an economic logic.
BRICS membership: a closed file for Algeria
Despite speculation about a potential invitation from BRICS, Algeria has officially put an end to these hopes.
Indeed, at the Johannesburg summit, held in August 2023, a total of six countries were selected to join the organization. However, to everyone’s surprise, Algeria was not admitted. An exclusion that raised several questions due to the lack of valid explanations on the economic level. A situation that is now pushing Algeria to turn its back on this organization.
However, there are rumors that one of the BRICS members imposed a veto against Algeria’s membership in the group. Moreover, it seems that a Gulf emirate was behind this opposition.
Indeed, although the Algerian authorities are surprised by the BRICS decision. In their eyes, the real loss lies with the latter. Through this position, the organization is depriving itself of a partner with various assets, including its strategic positioning, large surface area, and energy wealth.
Algeria was excluded from the conglomerate, but why?
The restrictive BRICS process reflects its strategic interests, which are not based on economic logicโthe choice of countries whose economic performance is lower than that of Algeria. Which are praised by the IMF and the World Bank, raises questions about the objectives of the BRICS.. Promote the emergence of the global economy or ally with politically influential partners?
Faced with the BRICS position, Algeria will not return to this page. Moreover, it will continue to defend its position with the organization’s members in other frameworks such as the Group of 77, the Non-Aligned Movement, or the UN Security Council.
