Brahim Ghali case: Spain defends Algeria’s interests

Spanish justice is said to be under strong pressure from the Executive to render a decision in favor of Algeria in the Brahim Ghali case, prosecuted for “genocide, torture, rape, and war crimes”, with four Algerian generals and some Polisario officials.

The National Hearing, the highest criminal body in Spain, which wants to shed light on these crimes committed by the leader of the Polisario Front, is under strong pressure from the Spanish authorities in order to render a decision favorable to Algeria, reports Maghreb Intelligence which also recalls that diplomatic relations between Morocco and Spain have deteriorated since the arrival of Brahim Ghali on Spanish soil under a false identity, in April.

According to the same source, this information of a probable interference of the Spanish Executive in the judicial system puts to the test the independence of the Spanish justice and already casts discredit on the final judgment that will deliver the National Hearing in this case. The case arouses a lot of reactions in Spanish and international public opinion.

Brahim Ghali arrived in Spain for purely “humanitarian” reasons, defended the Spanish government, trying to put an end to the criticisms and reactions of the Moroccan authorities and the international community who consider this act as a contempt for the many victims in the Tindouf camps. The latter had never ceased to call on the Spanish authorities to bring the Polisario leader and the separatist officials and Algerian generals to justice for the numerous violations of human rights and rape committed.

For his part, Brahim Ghali, who has no respect for Spanish justice, would refuse to appear without the prior agreement of the Algerian authorities. The Spanish judge summoned him to appear on June 1, 2021, indicating that he will be obliged to issue an international search and arrest warrant against him in the absence of the accused.
