Over the past three years, Algeria has made remarkable progress, moving from the status of importer to producer in the steel industry.
However, as Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production Ali Aoun pointed out, there is still a need for certain products, notably metal plates used in the automobile industry.
To meet this demand, the Oran Steel Complex plans to launch production of these metal plates before the end of 2024.
This initiative demonstrates the Algerian government’s commitment to improving its steel production capacities, targeting high-value-added products for the automobile industry.
This local production is expected to help reduce the country’s dependence on imports while strengthening the capabilities of domestic automakers.
Public support for industrial development
At the same time, Ali Aoun reiterated the government’s support for other key players in the steel sector, such as the Sider El Hadjar complex, which remains a national leader in steel production. The government is working to improve its infrastructure and technology, to allow it to regain its place in the Algerian industrial fabric and actively contribute to economic growth.
The minister explained that the objective of the development plan is to increase production capacity while diversifying steel products to meet local and international demands.
This diversification is essential to ensure that products meet the high-quality standards demanded by modern industries.
As part of its efforts to consolidate its industrial base, the government has also laid the foundations for the operation of a zinc and lead mine in Tala Hamza, in the wilaya of Béjaïa. This site hosts reserves estimated at 34 million tonnes, which are expected to support the growth of the mining sector for at least 20 years.
By taking advantage of its natural resources, Algeria aspires to diversify its industries and strengthen its economic independence. These combined efforts in the mining and steel sectors are expected to improve the country’s competitiveness on the international stage while contributing to national economic development.
