At least 257 dead in Algerian military plane crash, officials say

The aircraft crashed near the Boufarik military base soon after takeoff.

 

At least 257 people were killed when an Algerian military planeย crashed soon after takeoff in the north of the country, officials said Wednesday .

The aircraft went down in a field near the Boufarik military base. Boufarik is 20 miles from the capital, Algiers, and close to the Mediterranean Sea.

โ€œThere are more than 257 deaths. We canโ€™t say exact how many at this point,โ€ Mohammed Achour, chief spokesman for the civil protection agency, told The Associated Press.ย He said the plane was carrying soldiers.

The Soviet-designed Ilyushin Il-76 aircraftย had been headed for Bechar in southwestern Algeria, the official Algerie Presse news agency reported.

The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately clear. An investigation has been opened, theย Defense Ministry said in aย statement.
