At least 11 illegal migrants drowned off Libya’s western coast

“At least eleven migrants drowned this morning after an inflatable boat capsized off Zawya, Libya, while 12 survivors were rescued by the coast guard,” IOM wrote on Twitter.

At least eleven illegal migrants drowned on Sunday morning off the west coast of Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Due to instability and unrest for several years, Libya has become a privileged starting point for thousands of migrants who try to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach European coasts.

In recent days, hundreds of illegal immigrants have been rescued by the Libyan coast guard and returned to Libya, while many more have drowned at sea.

Rescued migrants find themselves in overcrowded reception centers across Libya, despite repeated international calls calling for their closure.

According to IOM and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, migrants and refugees in Libya continue to be subjected to arbitrary detention, ill-treatment, exploitation, and violence, which leaves them pushes to undertake risky journeys, in particular sea crossings which can end with fatal consequences.
