Arab-Islamic Summit on Gaza: Tunisia Marks Its Difference

Who would have believed it? Tunisia, which has always stood on the right of the Arab political spectrum, today finds itself on the left of this spectrum, notably by expressing firm positions concerning the Palestinian cause.

Yesterday, Saturday, November 11, 2023, our country expressed, once again, reservations on the resolutions contained in the final declaration of the extraordinary Arab-Islamic summit held in Riyadh, devoted to the examination of the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip and the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Tunisia had โ€œreservations on the content of the summit resolution, with the exception of three pointsโ€ which, according to the ministry, โ€œrequired the exclusive attention of the summitโ€. These are firstly the immediate cessation of Israel’s brutal aggression, the immediate introduction of urgent and adequate humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, and thirdly the lifting of the blockade imposed on them in the Strip. of Gaza and throughout Palestine.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, Nabil Ammar, who led the Tunisian delegation to the summit on behalf of President Kaรฏs Saรฏed, who was conspicuous by his absence at the summit, spoke during the work of the position of Tunisia’s firm support for the Palestinian people and their just cause.

He stressed that the delicate and extremely dangerous situation that the Palestinian people are going through, particularly in the Gaza Strip, requires the summit to focus exclusively on the three points on which Tunisia has no reservations out of the total of 31 resolutions included. in the final declaration of this summit.

โ€œThe Tunisian Republic expresses reservations on the entire content of the declaration, with the exception of the points relating to the immediate cessation of aggression against the Palestinian people, the immediate introduction of humanitarian aid, and the lifting of the blockade on the whole of Palestine,โ€ the final declaration said.

Iraq also expressed reservations about certain elements of this declaration.

Recall that on October 12, Tunisia also expressed reservations about the Arab League resolutions on the escalation in Gaza.
