Amira Bouraoui Case: France Responds to Algeria’s Anger

Paris intends to continue to deepen its relations with Algiers despite the friction linked to the return to France of the Franco-Algerian Amira Bouraoui who was to be expelled to Algeria via Tunisia. The case prompted the recall of the Algerian ambassador.

Arrested in Tunisia on Friday from where she risked being deported to Algeria, political activist and journalist Amira Bouraoui were finally able to board a flight to France on Monday evening.

Algiers deemed it an “illegal exfiltration” and recalled its ambassador “for consultations”. This Franco-Algerian was subject to a ban on leaving the territory in Algeria.

Algeria recalls its ambassador to France

Questioned on the fact that this case was likely to deteriorate bilateral relations, François Delmas, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared: “for our part, we intend to continue working to deepen our bilateral relationship”. On the other hand, he refused to comment on the recall of the Algerian ambassador, “an Algerian decision that it is not for me to comment on”.

“Situation individuelle”

He also did not want to comment “on this individual situation” but insisted on recalling that Amira Bouraoui was “a French national and that as such, the French authorities exercise their consular protection”. “This is a procedure that does not come out of the ordinary in any way,” he also reacted.

He also did not want to respond to the possibility that this affair calls into question the visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune scheduled for May.

After a severe cold snap in the fall of 2021, Paris and Algiers sealed a warming of their relations during a trip by French President Emmanuel Macron to Algiers last August.

The two heads of state had signed with great fanfare a joint declaration to relaunch bilateral cooperation.
