Algerian prisoner in Iraq released

ALGIERS- An Algerian national detained in Iraq sentenced for “illegal crossing” of borders has been released, announced Sunday Foreign Affairs Ministry.

“The services of Algeria’s embassy in Baghdad completed the consular procedures to allow the return of the released detainee to Algeria,” said the ministry’s spokesman Abdelaziz Benali Cherif in a statement to APS.

He said that the release of this national “is the fruit of discreet and continuous intense efforts, conducted with the Iraqi authorities, which showed comprehension and cooperation in the handling of this file.”

“The procedures are still underway to resolve, once and for all and as soon as possible, this issue,” he affirmed.

“The issue of Algerian prisoners in Iraq, which benefits from the personal attention of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was the main focus of the Algerian diplomacy over the last few years,” added the spokesman.
