Algerian Painter Baya Celebrated in Qatar

An exhibition currently being held in Doha, Qatar is showcasing the universal talent of the late Algerian painter Baya Mahieddine.

The famous Algerian artist has conquered the whole world with a colorful work of universal vitality. Baya drew her inspiration mainly from her native country, Algeria where she died in 1998.

His paintings are to be discovered within the framework of an exhibition which is entirely dedicated to him and which is currently being held at the National Library of Qatar.

” The exhibition, which will continue until the end of March 2023, includes 18 works by the Algerian artist, which highlight her pioneering artistic career and offer an interesting vision of her eventful life “, indicates a press release from the national library of the Qatar.

The latter, in partnership with the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf), inaugurated, on December 15, an exhibition celebrating the life, career and works of the Algerian artist Baya, as part of the activities of ” Qatar Year of Culture โ€“ Middle East, North Africa and South Asia 2022  โ€.

The exhibition, entitled ” Baya Mahieddine: A Discovery of Colors and Nature “, highlights Baya’s long artistic career which spans almost six decades and opens a window on her eventful life since the 1940s in the late 1990s.

The 18 works on display embody the themes and axes that Baya has always adopted throughout his career, and reveal elements, virtual or not, that resonate in his various works.

โ€œ The exhibited works are selected from three sources: the collection of the Arab Museum of Modern Art and the National Library of Qatar, in addition to collections from individuals in Doha ,โ€ the statement said.

The tribute of a Qatari minister to Baya

The National Library of Qatar organized a media tour of the exhibition in the presence of Dr. Hamad bin Abdelaziz al-Kawari, Minister of State and President of the National Library of Qatar, and the Ambassador of Algeria to Qatar , Dr. Mustafa Boutoura.

” We thank Qatar’s museums and owners of private collections for their support of this exhibition and for helping to tell Baya’s unique story to the library audience ,” the Qatari minister added.

Baya, a cosmopolitan and universal artist

Baya Mahieddine is considered one of the most famous Algerian artists of her time. His artistic career spans almost six decades, punctuated by decisive historical events such as the War of Independence and the Black Decade.

His paintings are deep, dreamlike and loaded with symbols and patterns, clearly influenced by the cultural heritage of Algeria. Baya, who lost her parents at the age of five, was drawn to art from the age of sixteen by observing her surroundings in Algeria, where Arab and Amazigh cultures intermingled. Baya was highly regarded by figures in the Parisian avant-garde artistic movement such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and the famous surrealist Andrรฉ Breton.

Known for her works in Algeria, France and the Middle East, Baya achieved international acclaim with her first North American exhibition hosted by New York University’s Gray Art Gallery in 2018.
