In July 2024, Algerian gas exports to Spain suffered a 34% drop compared to the previous month, according to data provided by the Washington-based energy specialist platform.
During this month, Algeria exported approximately 8.56 terawatt hours (TWh) of natural gas, compared to a total of 12.94 TWh of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) in June 2024.
This drop, the first since January 2023, caused Spanish gas imports to fall dramatically, registering a decrease of 12.5% โโyear-on-year and 3% compared to the previous month, reaching 27.76 TWh.
Algerian gas exports to Spain thus reached their lowest level since the beginning of the year in July 2024, mainly due to the absence of any LNG deliveries.
Madrid received 8.56 TWh of Algerian gas in July, compared to 12.94 TWh in June 2024, when supplies peaked.
During the first six months of 2024, Algeria has established itself asSpain’s main gas supplier, covering 37.3% of the country’s total imports.
Between January and June 2024, Algerian gas exports to Spain amounted to approximately 66.33 TWh, including 51.65 TWh of natural gas and 14.7 TWh of LNG. This represents a notable increase compared to the 50.04 TWh exported during the same period in 2023.
An unprecedented absence of Algerian LNG in several months
July 2024 marks an unprecedented period without Algerian LNG deliveries to Spain. In January 2023, Algeria had exported 8.55 TWh of natural gas to Madrid, without any LNG shipments. For comparison, in January 2024, Algerian exports to Spain amounted to 8.98 TWh, including 0.99 TWh of LNG.
Thus, July 2024 is the second month, since January 2023, without any delivery of Algerian LNG to Spain, according to data from Enagas, the operator of the Spanish gas network.
Algerian LNG exports to Spain reached their lowest levels in February 2023, with only 0.075 TWh, and in November 2023, with 0.17 TWh.
Exports were also low over the study period, reaching only 0.49 TWh in July 2023, August 2023 and February 2024.
Conversely, Algerian LNG supplies to Spain peaked in October 2023 at 6.04 TWh, in September 2023 at 5.05 TWh, in June 2024 at 4.29 TWh and in April 2024 at 3.93 TWh.
