Algeria, the Second Supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas to Europe at the End of April

According to data from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), Algeria is positioned as the second-largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe during the first four months of 2024.

Algeria thus shares the same position with Russia, each representing 18% of European supplies of liquefied natural gas at the end of last April.

In the first position, Norway remains in the lead, providing 56% of European supplies. Azerbaijan and Libya were in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with 12 billion and 2 billion cubic meters.

Indeed, the GECF report highlights that in April 2024, Italy absorbed 73% of Algerian gas exports to the European Union, which represents an increase of 6% compared to the previous month. Likewise, exports to Spain increased by 17% during the same month.

Remember that in 2023, Algeria alone occupied second place with 30 billion cubic meters exported, this volume representing 19% of the European Union’s total imports by pipeline. As for Russia, with 27 billion cubic meters, it occupied third position, representing 17% of imports.

Furthermore, the GECF also highlights a 3% increase in European gas imports by pipeline during the first four months of 2024 compared to the previous year. However, these imports remain below levels before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They amounted to 53 billion cubic meters, compared to around 51 billion cubic meters in 2023.
