By winning 0-3 in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, Algeria scored a second consecutive victory after a 2-0 success against Equatorial Guinea in qualifying for CAN 2025. A rally that allowed Mohamed Farsi (24 years old) to make a remarkable debut with the national team.
Born in Montreal and currently a right-wing player for Columbus Crew in MLS, Mohamed Farsi, at the age of 24, made his first selection for the national team this Tuesday against Liberia. A meeting that allowed him to stand out in Vladimir Petkovic’s 3-5-2 by producing a high-flying first half, during which he was the decisive passer on Amine Gouiri’s opener.

Canadian-Algerian, the piston has often traveled between the two countries to try to launch his career. After a short adventure at AS Aรฏn M’lila in Algeria, it was at Cavalry FC, in the Canadian Premier League, that Farsi revealed himself in the summer of 2020. Performances that allowed him to catch the eye of big MLS teams, until joining Columbus in 2022. With the Ohio club, the piston won the MLS Cup a year later, before failing in the final of the CONCACAF Champions League against Pachuca (3-0). An epic that attracted the attention of Canada, with which he plays in Espoirs (2 selections) and which he also represented in futsal, and of Algeria, which would finally manage to win the bet after a change of sporting nationality.
During the 76 minutes he played against Liberia, the piston demonstrated the full extent of his range with a large volume of play with and without the ball, an ability to break the lines with the ball at his feet in addition to being right in the last meters when serving his partners. A selection that will have particularly highlighted him, especially since Jaouen Hadjam, left piston, was not particularly convincing in the first half. Valued at 2 million euros by Transfermarkt, the Algerian could also quickly attract the eye of European clubs as players of his profile are a rare commodity today, even if his value could quickly increase.

If he will have to face fierce competition from Youcef Atal, who replaced him, Mohamed Farsi could manage to make a place for himself in Vladimir Petkovic’s 3-5-2. A blossoming that nevertheless requires other performances of this level to become credible, particularly with a view to integrating the Algerian selection for the next CAN 2025 in Morocco.
