Trail of armed Islamist groups
The Algerian army regularly announces that it has arrested or killed “terrorists”, a term used by the authorities to designate armed Islamists who have remained active since the civil war (1992-2002). This “black decade” officially left 200,000 dead.
Despite the 2005 Charter for Peace and Reconciliation, which was supposed to help turn the page on violence, armed groups continue to carry out sporadic operations.
According to an AFP count based on Defense Ministry press releases, 35 “terrorists” have been killed and 256 people supporting Islamist armed groups have been arrested during operations carried out by the army since January 1, 2024.
