In terms of salaries, Algerian national football team coach Vladimir Petkovic remains at the top of the list of the highest-paid African coaches.
The salary of Djamel Belmadi, who led the Greens from August 2018 to January 2024, was well above that of his African colleagues with a remuneration of 205,000 euros per month.
Under his reign, the Greens added a second African star to their jersey, winning the 2019 CAN in Egypt, and achieved an incredible run of 35 matches without defeat.
What is Vladimir Petkovic’s salary?
Unprecedented for an African selection, but the Algerian team Belmadi version failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, and was eliminated without glory in the first round of the 2021 and 2023 CAN. Failures pushed the Algerian Football Federation to part ways with Belmadi to recruit Vladimir Petkovic, a coach with no record.
On the salary side, the FAF negotiated a good discount compared to Belmadi’s remuneration which caused controversy in Algeria.
His successor earns much less than him, but he still retains first place on the list of the continent’s highest-paid coaches.
Vladimir Petkovic, the highest-paid coach in Africa
According to Le Monde, Vladimir Petkovic, who took over the reins of the Algerian team on March 4, earns 135,000 euros per month, or nearly 20 million dinars per month at the current official euro rate (146 dinars for one euro) or 1,000 times the minimum wage, which is 20,000 dinars per month. Which is already substantial. He is the only coach in Africa who earns more than 100,000 euros per month.
In second place is Hugo Broos, the Belgian coach of South Africa, who earns 75,000 euros, a colossal difference of 60,000 euros from Petkovic.
The coach of the reigning African champion Ivory Coast, Emerse Faés, receives the same salary.
Walid Regragui, who led Morocco to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, comes behind this trio with a monthly salary of 70,000 euros, which is almost half the remuneration of his Algerian counterpart Petkovic.
Aliou Cissé, coach of Senegal, who won the CAN 2021, was earning 46,000 euros per month. He has just left the Senegalese selection while Faouzi Benzarti (Tunisia) and Hossam Hassan (Egypt) only earn 10,000 euros and 30,000 euros respectively. These two technicians are far from Petkovic’s salary.
