The President of the Duma (the Russian Parliament), Viatcheslav Volodine, was received on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, by the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during a visit to Algeria, during which he also met the President of the ‘People’s National Assembly, Brahim Boughali.
Volodin’s visit includes discussions on interparliamentary relations, trade, and broader regional issues facing Algiers.
“Last year, the volume of trade increased 2.2 times, reaching $3.765 billion by the end of 2023,” Mr. Volodin said after a meeting with Mr. Boughali. “This is a significant growth in our external economic relations and we need to develop inter-parliamentary ties.”
The Speaker of the Russian Parliament stressed the importance of implementing the strategic agreement between Russia and Algeria. “Today, our relations are built thanks to our heads of state,” he declared, referring to the strategic partnership agreement signed during the visit of Algerian President Tebboune to Moscow last June.
“It is essential for us to support the implementation of this agreement through legislation and to contribute to it by putting in place systematic work using new formats that deliver positive results. We see this in our work with other countries,” added Mr. Volodin.
For his part, Mr. Boughali noted the strengthening of bilateral relations, as evidenced by the visit of the Algerian president to Moscow, and underlined the importance of discussions on the future of Palestine. “We have historical ties that began immediately after our country’s independence. We strive to develop economic, cultural, and scientific cooperation. We are engaged in dialogue on various issues,” he added.
Last May, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists that Algeria had submitted a request to become a dialogue partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). A month earlier, Algiers and Moscow signed a cooperation agreement to fight transnational organized crime, terrorism, extremism, and corruption.
