Algeria Reveals Its Mineral Potential: “Undiscovered” Deposits Found in 23 Provinces

The Algerian mining sector appears to be opening up to new prospects. This was revealed by the Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, during a plenary session at the People’s National Assembly (APN). Ongoing mineral research programs in several provinces have indeed yielded “very encouraging” results.

According to the minister, these explorations, covering 23 provinces, have brought to light unsuspected mineral resources. “These results will allow us to update our mineral map and create new industrial hubs,” he emphasized.

When questioned about the situation in the province of Sรฉtif, the minister clarified that several exploration operations are underway in this region and its surroundings. These include the search for polymetallic metals in the areas of Hadra and Kaf Al-Afsa, as well as the exploration of lead, zinc, and copper deposits in the regions of Azouar and Beni Segoual (provinces of Sรฉtif and Jijel).

Moreover, the ministry is currently working on granting a mining exploitation permit to the National Company for Non-Ferrous Mining Products and Useful Substances (ENOF), for the construction of a zinc concentrate production unit for metallurgical industries in Hammam Guergour (Bougaa-Sรฉtif).

Furthermore, the Djbel Anini Iron Mine, already in operation, offers promising prospects for expansion thanks to new exploration campaigns in the surrounding areas. In total, there are 97 quarry and mine operation permits and 5 exploration permits, which reflect the importance of the mining sector in Sรฉtif.

Studies conducted on the Boukhdema deposit have confirmed the existence of considerable geological reserves of zinc ore, paving the way for large-scale exploitation. ENOF is currently in the process of finalizing the legal paperwork to obtain the exploitation permit.

In parallel, the government is committed to ensuring equitable access to energy for all citizens. As Minister Arkab pointed out, the price of a kilowatt-hour in Algeria is among the lowest in the world, despite economic challenges. This proactive policy aims to preserve household purchasing power, especially in the High Plateaus and southern regions.

It is important to note that these developments occur in a context where Algeria is committed to diversifying its economy and reducing its dependence on hydrocarbons. Mineral resources thus represent a crucial lever to stimulate growth and create employment.
