Algeria has been refusing to accept back its nationals who are under an OQTF (Obligation to Leave French Territory) from France, adding to the tensions between the two nations. In response, 81% of French people support the imposition of economic sanctions against Algeria to force it to accept the return of these individuals, according to a CSA survey for Europe 1, CNews, and “Le Journal du Dimanche.”
Tensions and Public Opinion:
The relationship between France and Algeria has been strained for several months, and Algeria’s refusal to take back its citizens has exacerbated the situation. To address this, a significant majority of French citizens advocate for economic measures like increasing customs duties to pressure Algeria into compliance.
Demographic Breakdown:
Age Groups: Support is highest among those over 50, with 87% in favor. 78% of those under 35 agree, while 71% of those aged 35-49 support the sanctions.
Gender: There is almost no gender difference, with 81% of men and 80% of women in favor.
Socio-Professional Categories: There is consistent support across different social classes: 82% of the inactive, 81% from higher socio-professional categories (CSP+), and 80% from lower socio-professional categories (CSP-).
Political Affiliations:
Right-wing: 97% of Les Rรฉpublicains (LR) voters support the sanctions, followed by 93% of National Rally (RN) supporters. 86% of Renaissance voters also back this measure.
Left-wing: There’s less consensus on the left; 79% of Socialist Party supporters agree, while 70% of those close to Europe รcologie – Les Verts are in favor, with only 50% from La France Insoumise supporting sanctions.
