Protests on the Mali border due to lack of water.

At least three people were killed and several were injured yesterday in Tinzaouatine, Tamanrasset province, in clashes with Algerian gendarmerie forces during a demonstration by the population protesting against the cut in daily water quotas.

According to the testimony of the local population, the security forces repressed the demonstration by opening fire. Water scarcity has become a constant since the government’s oil sector recovery plan started.

Environmentalists had previously raised the alarm about the possibility of dangerously depleting the non-renewable aquifer due to the oil activities of the national company Sonatrach.
