Algeria: New Strategies for the Pharmaceutical Industry Sector

The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Ouacim Kouidri, presented yesterday before the Health, Social Affairs, Labor, and Vocational Training Committee of the National People’s Assembly (APN) the key outlines of the new sector strategy. This strategy primarily aims to ensure local medicine supply and boost exports.

The strategy focuses on strengthening national production to meet domestic market needs and developing plans for exporting pharmaceutical products by encouraging investment in the sector, especially since the coverage rate for national medicine needs has reached 79%.

The strategy includes granting five-year definitive authorizations to pharmaceutical establishments meeting required conditions, replacing annual provisional authorizations. It also involves revising the approval and pricing conditions for establishments and products in line with manufacturing requirements, as well as amending the registration and homologation procedures for products and medical devices. Additionally, it provides a transitional period for conducting bioequivalence studies for certain types of medicines and directs investment toward manufacturing medical devices, which are currently imported at a rate of 98%.
