Algeria: National Gendarmerie: More than 44 KG of Cocaine Seized

Elements of the National Gendarmerie (GN) of Laghouat seized more than 44 kg of hard drugs and arrested a criminal gang composed of seven (7) individuals, including one of foreign nationality, indicated a press release from this security force on Saturday.

“As part of the fight against organized crime, in all its forms, across the territory of the territorial group of the National Gendarmerie of Laghouat, the elements of the research brigade put an end

to the activity of a transnational criminal gang specialized in the transport, storage, and illicit trafficking of drugs throughout the national territory,” said the same source.

The criminal gang is made up of “seven (7) individuals, including one of foreign nationality, aged between 30 and 52 years old,” according to the press release.

The operation was carried out “following the search of a passenger vehicle by elements of the regional brigade specialized in the fight against smuggling, under the Regional Customs Directorate of Laghouat, at the

level of the RN 01 linking the wilayas of Laghouat and Djelfa, and the discovery of a significant quantity of hard drugs (cocaine) well concealed in the vehicle, estimated at 44.278 kg”, underlined the same source, adding that “the prohibited goods were seized and the driver arrested”.

After further investigation, the jurisdiction was extended to several wilayas of the country, leading to “the arrest of the seven members of the criminal gang and the seizure of three (3) vehicles, mobile phones, and sums of money in national currency and foreign currency.”

The accused will be brought before the competent courts for “possession, transportation, storage and illicit trafficking of hard drugs (cocaine) in a transnational organized criminal gang,” the press release concludes.
